How to Choose a UK Online Casino: A Seven-Point Checklist

Before you register anywhere, check who holds the licence, whether the website is theirs, and what tools and support you will have. Here is how to do it, with 6 licensed casinos compared on each point.

Seven Checks Before You Register

Each check takes a minute or two and uses information the casino must publish anyway.

1. Find the licence number Scroll to the bottom of the casino's homepage: the licence holder and its account number should be printed there. No number, no deposit.
2. Match the web address On the public register, open the licensee's domain list and confirm the site you are on is there and active.
3. Know who you are dealing with The licensed company is responsible for your account and complaints, even if the brand name is different.
4. Read the key terms Look for identity checks, withdrawal rules, fees and dormant-account charges. Clear, dated terms are a good sign.

Checks 5 to 7

  • Controls: deposit limits, reality checks, time-outs and self-exclusion are all in the account settings
  • Payments: debit card, e-wallet or bank options you already use — never a credit card
  • Support: a contact channel that suits you, with published hours if it is not 24/7

Every casino below held an active licence covering the site we link to on 30 September 2026. Where we could not confirm one of the other checks, its review says so.

Signs to walk away

No licence details, a domain that is not on the register, pressure to deposit quickly, offers to skip identity checks, or claims that the site is "not on GamStop". Licensed operators in Great Britain must check your identity and must take part in GamStop.

Set your limit first

Decide what you can afford to spend before you choose a casino, and set that as your deposit limit when you register.

Withdrawals cannot be reversed

After you press withdraw, the money is on its way out: UK rules stop a casino from offering to undo the request so you can keep playing. How long the payment then takes depends on the operator's checks, your payment method and your bank.

Slot design is regulated

Online slots in Great Britain cannot offer autoplay, cannot present a loss as a win, and must respect a minimum spin speed. Results are random, and most sessions end with less money than you started with.

Complaints have a route

Each licensee has to run a complaints procedure and sign up to an independent adjudicator. Eight weeks without a resolution gives you the right to escalate, at no cost to you.

Reading a Register Entry, Line by Line

The Gambling Commission's public register looks plain, but each part answers a question you should have before you register. Search by company name, account number or domain, open the result and you will see a licence summary: one row per activity the company is licensed for — for an online casino that is “Casino Remote”, often alongside “Bingo Remote” or betting activities — with a status, a start date and an end date. “Active” with the end date shown as “Current” is what you want to see.

Next to the summary are tabs for trading names (the brands the company uses), domain names (the websites it has declared), premises and regulatory actions. The domain list is the one to compare with your browser's address bar. The regulatory actions tab shows any warnings, extra licence conditions or financial penalties, with the decision date and a summary of what went wrong.

An example from our checks on 30 September 2026: the entry for account 67740 names Blue Rock Managed Services Limited as the licence holder behind Mr Green UK, with its casino and bingo activities active from 2 October 2025 — which is why we describe the company as new to the brand.

Warning Signs That Should Stop You

Most problems can be spotted before you hand over any money. Treat any of the following as a reason to close the tab:

  • The web address is not on the register. A familiar brand name on an unfamiliar domain is a classic copycat pattern.
  • No company name or account number in the footer. Licensed operators identify themselves; anonymity is a warning in itself.
  • An offer to skip identity checks. A casino licensed for Great Britain has to verify your age and identity before you play. A site that promises otherwise is not following UK rules.
  • Credit cards accepted. They have been banned for gambling with UK licensees since April 2020.
  • “Not on GamStop” marketing. Every online casino licensed for Great Britain has to take part in GamStop. A site advertising that it is outside the scheme is telling you it is not licensed here.
  • Pressure to act now. Countdown timers and “today only” messages are designed to stop you thinking. A decision about where to gamble can always wait.
  • Terms with no date or version. You should be able to tell which terms you accepted. If you cannot, you will struggle to rely on them later.

Matching a Casino to What Matters to You

Once the checks are done, the choice comes down to what you value. Each casino we cover has a short “best for” label, taken from the point where it does best in our assessment. It describes a kind of player the casino may suit — it is not a claim that it is the best casino in Britain.

  • Keeping an eye on your spending: Sky Vegas, run by Bonne Terre Gaming Limited.
  • Round-the-clock help and detailed payment pages: William Hill Casino, run by WHG (International) Limited.
  • Loss limits on a casino-only site: Mr Green UK, run by Blue Rock Managed Services Limited.
  • Live tables streamed from UK casinos: Grosvenor Casinos, run by Rank Interactive (Gibraltar) Limited.
  • Support by chat, email or phone at any hour: PlayOJO, run by Skill On Net Limited.
  • Blackjack variety: Betway Casino, run by Betway Limited.

Whichever you pick, set your deposit limit when you register, keep the help centre's contact details to hand and read the full assessment first — each one lists what to check before you join.
